I’m currently 2 weeks away from my first marathon, don’t know how I’m going to do, but in my mind, I’ve already won. I’ve lost 25 lbs, feel great, and I’m arguably in the best shape of my life. I’m also eating a lot better as I just don’t want to feel weighted down and heavy with large meals and unhealthy foods. Funny how getting in shape makes you change your diet also.
It had been 20 years since I have ran more than a mile, and last week I ran my peak of 21 miles (took about 3 hours). It almost doesn’t matter how I do on the marathon, although I would love to have a great race, I’ve already reached my goal of becoming fit and losing weight.
I’m a strong believer in setting fitness goals for yourself and using that goal to get fit. I’ve already received permission from my boss (my wife) to train for the LA Triathlon in September later this year. I currently can only swim 2 laps at the pool, and I’ve never ridden a road bike before, but it’s a new challenge, and new road to discovery, and I’m already excited about this coming journey. I would challenge all of you to set a fitness goal for yourself. Whether it’s a 10K, a half or full marathon, a road race, or a road challenge like Warrior Dash or Rock and Run, go sign up for it, then tell 10 of your friends and family you did. You will then be forced to train and exercise, and by the time the actual race comes by, you will be pleasantly surprised that you’re fitter than you’ve ever been, and you’ll have already won.
